ROCKVILLE, MD--(Marketwire - Jan 6, 2012) - MarketResearch.com has announced the addition of the new report "Portable Battery Powered Products: Global Markets" to their collection of Energy market reports. neon batteryImage by jimmiehomeschoolmom via FlickrThe market for portable, battery-powered products has grown from a few well-established niches such as flashlights and wristwatches to a diverse, rapidly growing market that encompasses computing, communications, entertainment, photographic, and publishing products; a variety of cordless tools; and entirely new classes of military and medical products. This diversity has been accomplished because of a unique synergy between the products themselves, the batteries they employ, and the battery chargers and power-management systems that recharge the batteries.

More than $423 billion worth of portable battery-powered products were sold in 2010, up from $410 billion sold in 2006. The market reached an estimated $479.6 billion by the end of 2011, and will reach more than $611 billion by 2016, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5%.

Several entirely new classes of batteries have been commercialized during the past 25 years, including nickel-metal hydride, zinc-air, lithium polymer, and the widely used lithium-ion design. Meanwhile, improved microelectronic battery charger controller technology allows the commercialization of higher-performance, smaller, and safer designs. This, in turn, has allowed for the commercialization of portable products that would be impossible without improved battery chargers, notably portable computers, cell phones, digital cameras, multi-functional touch-screen devices, and cordless hand tools. At the same time, competitively priced non-rechargeable primary batteries remain established power sources for many kinds of portable products.
As this synergy continues to develop, there are areas in which the portable product, battery, and battery charger industries could experience the explosive growth usually associated with emerging industries.
The communication/multi-functional segment accounts for roughly 30% of the total portable battery-powered product market. This segment is estimated to have reached nearly $141 billion in 2011 and will grow to $181.5 billion by 2016 at a CAGR of 5.2%.

Computers are the second largest market segment with a 28% share. BCC forecasted this market segment would reach $133 billion by the end of 2011 and reach nearly $189 billion by 2016 at a CAGR of 7.2%.

Cormack Securities iniates coverage of Talison Lithium, with a buy recommendation.

Talison Lithium Limited (TLH - TSX)
Fortifying Its Position As A Top Producer - Thursday, March 10, 2011

Over the last 12 months, Talison Lithium has made significant strides in growing its investor base and solidifying its position as the largest producer of lithium concentrate in the world. The company recently completed the first phase of expansionary work at its wholly owned Greenbushes mine near Perth, Australia and has set out to double its production capacity to an estimated 110,000tpy LCE per by F2013. Concurrent with its recent listing on the TSX, the company also purchased the Salares 7 lithium brine project in Chile. As such, Talison offers investors exposure to its current and growing spodumene production at Greenbushes, exploration upside from the brine projects at Salares 7 as well as leverage to accelerating lithium demand. Our outlook for the lithium sector remains positive. Demand for lithium, driven primarily by the growth of electric vehicles, is set to grow exponentially over the longer term. On the supply side, while there is no shortage of lithium deposits, customers are becoming highly discriminating, valuing security and quality of long-term supply. This is a customer base that Talison is ideally suited to satisfy.

MPhase Technologies Inc. Successfully Activates First Functional Multi-Cell Smart Nano Battery

Marketwire

mPhase Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: XDSL) reports that it has successfully triggered and activated its first functional multi-cell Smart Nano Battery.

Triggering and activation of the cells of the battery were achieved by using a technique called electrowetting, which gives the mPhase reserve battery one of its key attributes -- programmable triggering.

Triggering using this approach was accomplished by applying a brief pulse of electrical energy to a porous, smart surface membrane, located inside each cell in the battery, which caused the electrolyte to come in contact with the cell's electrodes, creating the chemical reaction to produce voltage inside the cell of the multi-cell battery.

The mPhase multi-cell battery consists of a matrix of 12 individual cells populated with an electrode stack consisting of lithium and carbon monofluoride materials (Li/CFx), with each cells rated at 3.0 volts. Using a specially designed circuit board for testing and characterization studies, each of the cells in the battery were independently triggered and activated without affecting any of the non-activated cells in the multi-cell configuration. Because of the unique design of the multi-cell battery, each cell in the battery has very long shelf until it is triggered.

The development of the Smart NanoBattery has been undertaken with funding support from a Phase II STTR Army award.

About mPhase Technologies, Inc. mPhase Technologies is introducing a revolutionary Smart Surface technology enabled by breakthroughs in nanotechnology, MEMS processing and microfluidics. Our Smart Surface technology has potential applications within drug delivery systems, lab-on-a-chip analytic systems, self-cleaning systems, liquid and chemical sensor systems, and filtration systems. mPhase has pioneered its first Smart Surface enabled product, the mPhase Smart NanoBattery.

In addition to the Smart Surface technology, mPhase recently introduced its first product, the mPower Emergency Illuminator, an award-winning product designed by Porsche Design Studio and sold via the mPower website: http://www.mpowertech.com.
